Acrylic Material Properties

If you are interested in the brightness and permeability of light, acrylic sheets will perform better than polycarbonate sheets. On the other hand, if you are looking for high impact resistance, custom plexiglass polycarbonate plates are the obvious choice. Although any plastic can share the same shape, it will work very differently. Acrylic and polycarbonate sheets have different characteristics.

The molds are cooled, opened and the resulting acrylic plastic sheets are used or processed immediately to improve the overall quality of the final product. Poly belongs to a group of materials called technical plastics. PMMA is also known as acrylic, acrylic glass, perspex or plexiglass, but also under various trade names and brands Crylux, plexiglass, acrylic, Astariglas, Lucite, Perclax and Perspex . This plastic is often used in the form of a plate as a light or glass-resistant alternative to breakage. It can also be used as a foundry resin, inks and coatings and for many other purposes.

Acrylic or plexiglass is in fact a plastic and polymethyl methacrylate . It is known for its transparency, glossy finish and glass feel. It is break-resistant and scratch-resistant and is therefore used so much in the construction industry after cutting custom plexiglass plates. Even small decorative items are now made of acrylic to prevent breakage and loss.

Laser cutting can be used to form complicated PMMA sheet designs. PMMA evaporates into gaseous compounds by laser cutting, making a very clean cut and cutting very easy. Pulsating laser cutting, however, introduces high internal stresses along the cutting edge, which produce an unwanted “stress madness” at the cutting edge when exposed to solvents and a few millimeters deep. Even the ammonium-based glass cleaner and almost everything but soap and water produce similar unwanted turns, sometimes over the surface of the cut parts, over long distances from the stressed edge. The annealing of the PMMA sheet / parts is therefore a mandatory step of further processing when the intention is to chemically bind the parts of the laser cut.

It is often preferred because of its moderate properties, easy operation and processing and low costs. The glassy transition temperature of the atactic PMMA is 105 ° C (221 ° F). PMMA is therefore an organic glass at room temperature; that is., is under your Tg. The formation temperature starts at the glass transition temperature and rises from there. All common molding processes can be used, including injection molding, compression molding and extrusion.
